DC generators

Convert mechanical energy into DC using commutators.

In depth

A rotating armature in a magnetic field produces AC EMF E=kΦω, rectified by a commutator. Separately excited, shunt, series and compound types have different voltage regulation. Largely replaced by AC alternators with rectifiers.

Key points

  • Armature reaction
  • Brush sparking
  • Voltage build-up in self-excited machines
Example

A bicycle dynamo is a small generator.

Why it matters

DC generators are the historical basis of direct current supply, and the commutator principle is also used in many DC motors.

Where this is used

  • Explaining how a dynamo charges a bicycle lamp.
  • Understanding the commutator in an old DC traction motor.
  • Choosing a generator to provide DC excitation for a machine.

Frequently asked questions

What is DC generators?

Convert mechanical energy into DC using commutators.

Why is it important to understand DC generators?

DC generators are the historical basis of direct current supply, and the commutator principle is also used in many DC motors.

What does a commutator do?

It reverses the connection of the armature coil at the right moment, so the output current keeps one direction.

Why are DC generators less common today?

Power electronics convert AC to DC efficiently and with less maintenance, so DC generators with brushes and commutators are mostly replaced.

How is DC generators used in practice?

Typical applications include explaining how a dynamo charges a bicycle lamp, understanding the commutator in an old DC traction motor and choosing a generator to provide DC excitation for a machine.

What should I learn before DC generators?

Study "Electromagnetic induction in machines" first (topic 56 of 106 in Electrical Engineering). It covers the groundwork this topic builds on.

What are the key points of DC generators?

Armature reaction. Brush sparking. Voltage build-up in self-excited machines.

Can you give an example of DC generators?

A bicycle dynamo is a small generator.

What comes after DC generators?

The next topic is "DC motors", which builds directly on this one.

How difficult is DC generators?

It is classed as Intermediate in Electrical Engineering (topic 57 of 106). It is an intermediate topic. Work through the beginner topics in Electrical Engineering first.
