Motor starting methods

Star-delta, soft starters and drives limit inrush current.

In depth

Direct on-line starting draws large inrush currents. Remedies: star-delta (1/3 current), autotransformer, soft starter (voltage ramp) and VFD. Wound-rotor motors use rotor resistance. Choice depends on load torque and supply capacity.

Key points

  • Voltage dips on weak grids
  • Mechanical stress
  • Reduced torque with reduced voltage (∝V²)
Example

A pump motor uses a soft starter to avoid water hammer.

Why it matters

Starting methods limit the large inrush current that can dim lights and trip protection, so they are important for large motors.

Where this is used

  • Using a star-delta starter for a large pump motor.
  • Installing a soft starter on a conveyor to reduce mechanical shock.
  • Choosing a drive for a crusher that must start under heavy load.

Frequently asked questions

What is Motor starting methods?

Star-delta, soft starters and drives limit inrush current.

Why is it important to understand motor starting methods?

Starting methods limit the large inrush current that can dim lights and trip protection, so they are important for large motors.

Why does a motor draw large current at start?

At standstill there is no back EMF, so the current is limited only by winding impedance, which can be several times the running current.

What does a soft starter do?

It gradually increases the voltage applied to the motor, which limits inrush current and reduces mechanical stress during start-up.

How is Motor starting methods used in practice?

Typical applications include using a star-delta starter for a large pump motor, installing a soft starter on a conveyor to reduce mechanical shock and choosing a drive for a crusher that must start under heavy load.

What should I learn before Motor starting methods?

Study "Stepper and BLDC motors" first (topic 63 of 106 in Electrical Engineering). It covers the groundwork this topic builds on.

What are the key points of Motor starting methods?

Voltage dips on weak grids. Mechanical stress. Reduced torque with reduced voltage (∝V²).

Can you give an example of Motor starting methods?

A pump motor uses a soft starter to avoid water hammer.

What comes after Motor starting methods?

The next topic is "Variable frequency drives", which builds directly on this one.

How difficult is Motor starting methods?

It is classed as Intermediate in Electrical Engineering (topic 64 of 106). It is an intermediate topic. Work through the beginner topics in Electrical Engineering first.
