Superconductors

Materials with zero resistance below critical temperature.

In depth

Superconductors have zero DC resistance below T_c and expel magnetic fields (Meissner effect). Type I and II; low-Tc NbTi/Nb₃Sn (4 K) and high-Tc YBCO/BSCCO (77 K). Applications: MRI magnets, fusion magnets, maglev, cables, SQUIDs. Cooling cost is a barrier.

Key points

  • Critical current and field
  • Flux pinning
  • Quench protection
Example

MRI machines use NbTi coils cooled by liquid helium.

Why it matters

Superconductors carry current with no resistance, which enables very strong magnets, low-loss cables and sensitive detectors.

Where this is used

  • Cooling a superconducting magnet for an MRI scanner.
  • Using superconducting cables to carry power in a dense city.
  • Building a magnetometer with a SQUID detector.

Frequently asked questions

What is Superconductors?

Materials with zero resistance below critical temperature.

Why is it important to understand superconductors?

Superconductors carry current with no resistance, which enables very strong magnets, low-loss cables and sensitive detectors.

What is the critical temperature?

The temperature below which a superconductor has zero electrical resistance, and there are also critical field and current limits.

Why do superconductors need cooling?

Most superconductors work only at very low temperature, so cryogenic cooling is needed, although high-temperature superconductors reduce the cooling burden.

How is Superconductors used in practice?

Typical applications include cooling a superconducting magnet for an MRI scanner, using superconducting cables to carry power in a dense city and building a magnetometer with a SQUID detector.

What should I learn before Superconductors?

Study "Magnetic materials" first (topic 53 of 100 in Materials & Chemical). It covers the groundwork this topic builds on.

What are the key points of Superconductors?

Critical current and field. Flux pinning. Quench protection.

Can you give an example of Superconductors?

MRI machines use NbTi coils cooled by liquid helium.

What comes after Superconductors?

The next topic is "Optical and photonic materials", which builds directly on this one.

How difficult is Superconductors?

It is classed as Intermediate in Materials & Chemical (topic 54 of 100). It is an intermediate topic. Work through the beginner topics in Materials & Chemical first.
