Boundary and initial conditions

Constraints that select the one physical solution from many mathematical ones.

In depth

Boundary conditions specify behaviour at the edges: Dirichlet fixes the value, Neumann fixes the derivative (flux) and Robin mixes both. Initial conditions specify the state at t=0. Without them PDE solutions are not unique.

Key points

  • Physical meaning: fixed temperature, insulation, convection
  • Well-posed problems have unique stable solutions
  • Over-specification causes contradictions
Example

An insulated end of a rod has u_x=0 (Neumann).

Why it matters

A PDE has infinitely many solutions until boundary and initial conditions pick out the one that matches the physical situation.

Where this is used

  • Setting the surface temperature of a wall as a boundary condition for a heat model.
  • Specifying a fixed end and a free end on a vibrating cable.
  • Defining the starting temperature distribution before a heating cycle.

Frequently asked questions

What is Boundary and initial conditions?

Constraints that select the one physical solution from many mathematical ones.

Why is it important to understand boundary and initial conditions?

A PDE has infinitely many solutions until boundary and initial conditions pick out the one that matches the physical situation.

What is the difference between a Dirichlet and a Neumann condition?

Dirichlet fixes the value of the variable on the boundary, such as temperature. Neumann fixes its normal derivative, such as heat flux.

What goes wrong with an incorrect boundary condition?

The model may give a mathematically valid but physically wrong answer, or the problem may have no unique solution at all.

How is Boundary and initial conditions used in practice?

Typical applications include setting the surface temperature of a wall as a boundary condition for a heat model, specifying a fixed end and a free end on a vibrating cable and defining the starting temperature distribution before a heating cycle.

What should I learn before Boundary and initial conditions?

Study "Separation of variables for PDEs" first (topic 75 of 104 in Engineering Mathematics). It covers the groundwork this topic builds on.

What are the key points of Boundary and initial conditions?

Physical meaning: fixed temperature, insulation, convection. Well-posed problems have unique stable solutions. Over-specification causes contradictions.

Can you give an example of Boundary and initial conditions?

An insulated end of a rod has u_x=0 (Neumann).

What comes after Boundary and initial conditions?

The next topic is "Probability basics", which builds directly on this one.

How difficult is Boundary and initial conditions?

It is classed as Advanced in Engineering Mathematics (topic 76 of 104). It is an advanced topic. It assumes you are comfortable with the intermediate topics in Engineering Mathematics.
