Confidence intervals
A range that would contain the true parameter in a stated fraction of repeated experiments.
In depth
A 95% confidence interval x̄±t·s/√n means that if the experiment were repeated many times, 95% of such intervals would contain the true mean. Narrower intervals need more samples or lower variability.
Key points
- Width ∝ 1/√n
- Higher confidence means wider interval
- Does not say the parameter is 95% likely in this interval
ExampleMean strength 410 MPa ±8 MPa conveys measurement uncertainty.
What is Confidence intervals?
A range that would contain the true parameter in a stated fraction of repeated experiments.
Why is it important to understand confidence intervals?
Confidence intervals show how precise an estimate is, which matters when you report a measured value with a claim about its reliability.
What does a 95 percent confidence interval mean?
If the experiment were repeated many times, about 95 percent of the intervals so constructed would contain the true value. It does not mean there is a 95 percent chance the true value lies in one interval.
Why does a larger sample give a narrower interval?
The standard error shrinks with the square root of the sample size, so more data reduce uncertainty.
How is Confidence intervals used in practice?
Typical applications include reporting the mean strength of a material with a stated uncertainty, estimating the average fuel use of a fleet from a sample of trips and checking whether a new process gives a measurably different average.
What should I learn before Confidence intervals?
Study "Descriptive statistics" first (topic 84 of 104 in Engineering Mathematics). It covers the groundwork this topic builds on.
What are the key points of Confidence intervals?
Width ∝ 1/√n. Higher confidence means wider interval. Does not say the parameter is 95% likely in this interval.
Can you give an example of Confidence intervals?
Mean strength 410 MPa ±8 MPa conveys measurement uncertainty.
What comes after Confidence intervals?
The next topic is "Hypothesis testing", which builds directly on this one.
How difficult is Confidence intervals?
It is classed as Advanced in Engineering Mathematics (topic 85 of 104). It is an advanced topic. It assumes you are comfortable with the intermediate topics in Engineering Mathematics.
