Linear independence and rank
Rank counts independent rows; it decides if a system has unique, many or no solutions.
In depth
Vectors are linearly independent if no one is a combination of the others. The rank is the number of independent rows or columns. A system Ax=b has a unique solution if rank equals the number of unknowns, none if inconsistent, and infinitely many if rank is lower.
Key points
- Rank-nullity theorem
- Rank ≤ min(m,n)
- Full rank means invertible if square
ExampleA truss is statically determinate only if its equilibrium matrix has full rank.
Rank and independence tell you if a system has a unique solution, no solution or infinitely many, which avoids wasted effort.
What is Linear independence and rank?
Rank counts independent rows; it decides if a system has unique, many or no solutions.
Why is it important to understand linear independence and rank?
Rank and independence tell you if a system has a unique solution, no solution or infinitely many, which avoids wasted effort.
What is the rank of a matrix?
The number of linearly independent rows or columns, which equals the dimension of the space its columns span.
What does a rank-deficient system mean in a structure?
There is a mechanism or missing support, so the structure can move without resistance and needs more constraints.
How is Linear independence and rank used in practice?
Typical applications include checking whether a truss is stable from its member count and rank, deciding if sensors give enough independent measurements to estimate states and finding redundant equations in a network of constraints.
What should I learn before Linear independence and rank?
Study "Gaussian elimination" first (topic 51 of 104 in Engineering Mathematics). It covers the groundwork this topic builds on.
What are the key points of Linear independence and rank?
Rank-nullity theorem. Rank ≤ min(m,n). Full rank means invertible if square.
Can you give an example of Linear independence and rank?
A truss is statically determinate only if its equilibrium matrix has full rank.
What comes after Linear independence and rank?
The next topic is "Vector spaces and basis", which builds directly on this one.
How difficult is Linear independence and rank?
It is classed as Intermediate in Engineering Mathematics (topic 52 of 104). It is an intermediate topic. Work through the beginner topics in Engineering Mathematics first.
