Moment of a force
Tendency to rotate about a point, M=F×d.
In depth
Moment M=F·d about a point is the force times the perpendicular distance (or r×F in 3D). Positive is typically counter-clockwise. Varignon's theorem says the moment of a resultant equals the sum of moments of its components.
Key points
- Units: N·m
- Moving a force along its line does not change moment
- Moments are free vectors in couples only
ExampleA 20 N force on a 0.25 m wrench produces 5 N·m.
What is Moment of a force?
Tendency to rotate about a point, M=F×d.
Why is it important to understand moment of a force?
Moments explain why a long spanner loosens a nut more easily and why a heavy load on a cantilever tips a support.
What is the difference between moment and torque?
They are the same quantity computed in different contexts. Torque is usually a rotation of a shaft, while moment describes the turning effect of a force about a point in a structure.
Does the choice of reference point change the moment?
Yes, for a single force. The moment about a different point differs by the force times the distance between the points, so state the point clearly.
How is Moment of a force used in practice?
Typical applications include sizing the spanner length for a required bolt torque, checking that a crane does not tip over when it lifts a load and finding the moment on a wall bracket from a shelf load.
What should I learn before Moment of a force?
Study "Equilibrium of a particle" first (topic 6 of 106 in Engineering Mechanics). It covers the groundwork this topic builds on.
What are the key points of Moment of a force?
Units: N·m. Moving a force along its line does not change moment. Moments are free vectors in couples only.
Can you give an example of Moment of a force?
A 20 N force on a 0.25 m wrench produces 5 N·m.
What comes after Moment of a force?
The next topic is "Couples", which builds directly on this one.
How difficult is Moment of a force?
It is classed as Beginner in Engineering Mechanics (topic 7 of 106). It is an entry-level topic. It relies only on basic school mathematics and the ideas introduced earlier in this discipline.
