Adders and subtractors

Half and full adders implement binary arithmetic.

In depth

A half adder: Sum=A⊕B, Carry=A·B. A full adder adds carry-in: Sum=A⊕B⊕C, Carry=AB+C(A⊕B). Ripple-carry chains are simple but slow; carry-lookahead is faster. Subtraction by adding the two's complement.

Key points

  • Overflow flag
  • Carry-select adders
  • ALU building block
Example

Four full adders make a 4-bit ripple adder.

Why it matters

Adders are the core of processor arithmetic, and building them from gates shows how carries limit speed.

Where this is used

  • Designing a 16-bit adder for a sensor fusion calculation.
  • Understanding carry propagation delay in a microprocessor ALU.
  • Implementing a subtractor using two's complement and an adder.

Frequently asked questions

What is Adders and subtractors?

Half and full adders implement binary arithmetic.

Why is it important to understand adders and subtractors?

Adders are the core of processor arithmetic, and building them from gates shows how carries limit speed.

What is the difference between a half adder and a full adder?

A half adder adds two bits and produces sum and carry. A full adder also accepts a carry in, so several can be chained.

Why are ripple-carry adders slow?

Each carry must pass through every stage in turn, so the delay grows with the number of bits, which is why faster adders are used.

How is Adders and subtractors used in practice?

Typical applications include designing a 16-bit adder for a sensor fusion calculation, understanding carry propagation delay in a microprocessor ALU and implementing a subtractor using two's complement and an adder.

What should I learn before Adders and subtractors?

Study "Combinational circuits" first (topic 40 of 104 in Electronics & Embedded). It covers the groundwork this topic builds on.

What are the key points of Adders and subtractors?

Overflow flag. Carry-select adders. ALU building block.

Can you give an example of Adders and subtractors?

Four full adders make a 4-bit ripple adder.

What comes after Adders and subtractors?

The next topic is "Multiplexers and decoders", which builds directly on this one.

How difficult is Adders and subtractors?

It is classed as Intermediate in Electronics & Embedded (topic 41 of 104). It is an intermediate topic. Work through the beginner topics in Electronics & Embedded first.
