Rectifiers

Convert AC to DC using diodes or thyristors.

In depth

Diode bridge rectifiers convert AC to pulsating DC; capacitor filters smooth it with ripple ΔV≈I/(fC). Controlled rectifiers use thyristors to adjust average voltage: V_dc=(2V_m/π)cosα for single-phase full wave. Three-phase gives lower ripple. Power factor correction circuits reduce harmonics.

Key points

  • Peak inverse voltage
  • Ripple factor
  • Commutation overlap
Example

A 230 V bridge rectifier gives about 325 V DC peak.

Why it matters

Rectifiers turn AC into DC for electronics and battery charging, and their design sets ripple and efficiency.

Where this is used

  • Building a bridge rectifier for a 12 V power supply.
  • Designing the input stage of a battery charger.
  • Converting mains to DC for a DC motor drive.

Frequently asked questions

What is Rectifiers?

Convert AC to DC using diodes or thyristors.

Why is it important to understand rectifiers?

Rectifiers turn AC into DC for electronics and battery charging, and their design sets ripple and efficiency.

What is the difference between half-wave and full-wave rectification?

Half-wave uses one half of each cycle, giving high ripple. Full-wave uses both halves, giving lower ripple and better utilisation.

What does a smoothing capacitor do?

It stores charge during the peaks and supplies it between them, which reduces the ripple on the DC output.

How is Rectifiers used in practice?

Typical applications include building a bridge rectifier for a 12 V power supply, designing the input stage of a battery charger and converting mains to DC for a DC motor drive.

What should I learn before Rectifiers?

Study "Power electronics converters" first (topic 87 of 106 in Electrical Engineering). It covers the groundwork this topic builds on.

What are the key points of Rectifiers?

Peak inverse voltage. Ripple factor. Commutation overlap.

Can you give an example of Rectifiers?

A 230 V bridge rectifier gives about 325 V DC peak.

What comes after Rectifiers?

The next topic is "DC-DC converters", which builds directly on this one.

How difficult is Rectifiers?

It is classed as Advanced in Electrical Engineering (topic 88 of 106). It is an advanced topic. It assumes you are comfortable with the intermediate topics in Electrical Engineering.
